Fire service helps young people achieve their potential

Building confidence, improving practical skills and teamwork and getting young people ready for further training and employment are the aims of the Prince’s Trust TEAM programme. The programme is run by Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and funded by The College of West Anglia.

The FREE 12 week programme runs in January, April and September and is open to people aged 16 to 26 who are not in employment, training or education. It does not affect benefits and is offered at Dereham, King’s Lynn, North Walsham and Norwich.

Among the highlights of the programme are a week-long residential course, fundraising and community activities, work experience placements and careers advice.

Oliver (18) found out about TEAM through his local JobCentre and is very glad he took part: “It was quite challenging to start with and I wasn’t very confident, but it was very rewarding. I particularly enjoyed the work placements I did with the fire service, College of West Anglia and at Downham Market Academy in their IT department.

“I found the residential week the most difficult as I was out of my comfort zone, but I learned so much during the programme. I would recommend that anyone who is unsure should give it a go as all of my concerns and worries went away and I had a great experience.”
